Art Deco 1910–1939

Melbourne Winter Masterpieces
28 June to 5 October 2008

This winter 2008, the National Gallery of Victoria is the exclusive Australian venue for a major exhibition of the celebrated and popular style, Art Deco. The exhibition is the most popular program ever mounted at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, which houses one of the world’s great collections of Art Deco.

The exhibition comprises over 300 works and covers all artistic media from painting to photography, fashion to film and architecture to jewellery. Spanning the boom of the roaring Twenties and the Depression–ridden 1930s, Art Deco came to epitomize all the glamour, opulence and hedonism of the Jazz age.

It was the era of the flapper girl, the luxury ocean liner, the Hollywood film and the skyscraper.

Open daily 10am–5pm
Open until 9pm every Wednesday

2008: THE YEAR TO DATE

August: Deco at the Beach.

A day at the beach became an entrenched feature of many Australians’ leisure time during the early decades of the twentieth century, coinciding with the rise and spread of the Art Deco style across the world.

In Sydney everyday life and modern style overlapped as members of the artistic community found life at the beach a rich resource and interpreted it in various ways into what may be this country’s unique contribution to the Art Deco style.

This presentation by Roy Lumby explored beach culture and the many works of art it inspired; ranging from graphic design to literature and sculpture.

May: A Walk through The Rocks

Although The Rocks is as old as European settlement in New South Wales, a remarkably large part of its environs reflect the concerns, aspirations and fears of twentieth century Sydney. Society members and guests enjoyed a day by the harbour wandering around Australia’s most historic and colourful neighbourhood. We explored its venerable pubs and other architectural treasures as well.

April: Sydney Tramway Museum

On April 6th, a tour was organised to view the Sydney Tramway Museum in Loftus, NSW.
As well as old Sydney trams, the Museum has trams from Ballarat, Berlin, Brisbane, Melbourne (above), Munich, Nagasaki and San Francisco.
